Conference Call Etiquette

  • Announce yourself when you enter the call.  If someone is speaking, wait for a break in the conversation to announce yourself.
  • When not speaking, please consider muting your phone.  Background noise is very disrupting to a call.  A sample list of ways to mute your phone is listed below.
  • When speaking for longer than a few sentences, pause occasionally to give others a chance to comment.  You can also ask for questions.
  • When finished speaking, announce it by saying something like “I’m done”.
  • When asking someone a question, remember they may have to un-mute their phone, so give them a little time before going on.
  • If you have a comment or question, it may be a good idea to un-mute and wait for a chance to comment.
  • Be careful about sharing personal information.
  • Try to keep on point and bring up different discussion points at the appropriate time.
  • Try to avoid heated topics which usually involve politics religion or sports teams.
  • Always be civil, courteous and polite.
